    Attractively practical This good-looking hatchback offers five-door practicality, which makes getting in and out of the rear compartment as straightforward as possible for travellers of all ages. The cabin accommodates up to five people, and offers plenty of knee, leg and headroom. And as well as numerous useful stowage cubbies, located in both compartments, the Octavia possesses a generous 568-litre boot space. With 60/40 split-folding rear seats dropped, cargo capacity increases to an even more impressive 1,558 litres.
    Room on top Standard Octavia iterations are fitted with eye-catching silver roof rails, which allow for extra load-bearing opportunities – not that you should have much problem getting most things into the boot. However, if you do find yourself struggling, outsized items such as bikes and surfboards can be transported overhead with ease.
    Alloy allure The car rides on 17-inch alloys as standard. Not only are these wheels at least as durable as their steel counterparts, they’re much lighter – a quality that helps deliver enhanced efficiency. And did we mention they look smart too?
    Sporty fixtures Alloy wheels aren’t the Octavia’s only sporty accoutrement – the vehicle also features a three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, which is leather-wrapped and fitted with audio controls. Not only does this look rather smart, it provides an assured grip, and allows the driver to focus on the road ahead while simultaneously adjusting music volume levels, for instance.
    That’s infotainment The Škoda Octavia is supplied with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment as standard. Included are eight loudspeakers, an AM/FM radio, AUX and USB inputs and Bluetooth connectivity, with the latter enabling audio streaming and hands-free telephony. If you choose the top-tier RS 245 trim, you’ll also have the benefit of a 9.2-inch touchscreen system, which features satellite navigation and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. The latter allows you to mirror your smartphone via the car’s display screen.
    Tech pack If you’re happy with the standard Octavia – and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be, you can still enjoy all of the RS 245’s infotainment features. Simply choose the optional Tech Pack, which comes with a full range of infotainment features. As well as wireless charging, Advanced Keyless Entry and Smart Start, it also features additional driver aids, such as Automatic Parking Assist.
    Safety assured The Octavia has been awarded ANCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating. This is in recognition of the car’s overall resilience during a wide-range of rigorous crash-test situations, not to mention an array of passive and active safety features that are included as standard. Just some of these include multiple airbags, ISOFIX child-seat fixtures, Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Stability Control.
    Autonomous Emergency Braking An essential driver aid, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) is installed as standard. AEB monitors activity in front of the car – if the vehicle ahead (or a cyclist or pedestrian) is deemed to be too close, the driver is alerted and braking pressure is automatically initiated.
    Performance Entry-level Octavia models are fitted with a 1.4-litre petrol engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. (Seven-speed automatic transmission is available as an option, or issued as standard with RS 245 grades.) This returns a combined figure of 5.4 litres per 100 km and produces CO2 emissions from just 110g/km. It also allows the car to proceed from 0-100 km/h in approximately 8.1 seconds.
    Optimal power RS 245 trims are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces 370Nm of torque, allowing the car to go from 0-100 km/h in roughly 6.6 seconds. This unit’s potency doesn’t hamper the car’s efficiency too much because it still manages a combined 6.5 litres per 100 km, while producing emissions from 125g/km.
    Fuel-saving features Irrespective of which engine your Octavia is fitted with, it will feature Start/Stop technology. This fuel-saving feature automatically switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a natural stop – at traffic lights, for example. And when you need to get going once more, it switches the engine back on again.
    Adaptive Cruise Control Included as standard, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) not only allows you to set a maximum speed ahead of each trip, it adjusts speed according to the prevailing traffic flow. What’s more, ACC helps save on petrol when set at 80km/h – consuming (as much as) 20-percent less fuel in the process.
